Technical answer

Where do you tie down a load on a roof platform?

Short answer

On a Wedgetail rack, tie the load down to eyelets that lock into the rack's existing channels (packs of four for Wedgetail Adventure and Wedgetail Trade), to Wedgetail Trade side tie down points, or to the Commercial Max and Oval Steel universal tiedown kit, using tie down or ratchet straps. Because the eyelets sit in the channel, you can put a tie down point where the load needs it. The universal T plate is different: it fastens a Wedgetail rack to a track or strut rail, or joins crossbars in a T. Every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full rating, 100 or 150 kg dynamic on most platforms.

Tie down points by range

The accessories for Wedgetail Adventure and accessories for Wedgetail Trade guides list the rest of each range.

What a T plate is for

The universal T plate is a set of four 5 mm plates with strut nuts and hardware that mount to Wedgetail crossbars. It fastens a Wedgetail rack where a track or strut mounting rail is present, for example on a canopy or service body, and it can also be used as a T junction plate between Wedgetail crossbars. It is a fastening part, not a tie down point.

How to tie the load down

  1. Place heavy items low and centred, and keep the total within the rack's dynamic rating and the vehicle maker's roof limit.
  2. Slide the eyelets or tie down points along the channel so there is one at each corner of the load.
  3. Run straps over the load to the tie down points and tension them so the load cannot move.
  4. Tie long loads at the front and the rear, and check the straps after the first few kilometres and after rough roads.

The load safely guide covers weight and balance, and how to strap a ladder covers ladders. The eyelets and tie down points have no published load rating of their own.

Questions people ask

Where do you tie down a load on a roof platform?

To tie down points on the platform. On a Wedgetail, eyelets lock into the existing channels, so you can place one wherever the load needs it.

Do the tie down eyelets fit any Wedgetail rack?

They lock into the existing channels of a Wedgetail rack and come in two versions: an Adventure pack of four and a Trade kit of four. For Commercial Max and Oval Steel, use the universal tiedown kit.

What is a T plate on a roof rack?

A plate that fastens the rack to a track or strut mounting rail, or joins two crossbars in a T. The Wedgetail universal T plate is a kit of four with strut nuts and hardware.

Ratchet straps or tie down straps?

Either, if they are tensioned so the load cannot move. Wedgetail sells tiedown straps and ratchet straps in packs of two.

How many tie down points do I need?

At least one at each corner of the load. Eyelets come in packs of four and slide along the channel, so you can add more for long or bulky loads.

What load rating do the eyelets have?

No published rating. The load counts against the rack's rating (100 or 150 kg dynamic on most Wedgetail platforms) and the vehicle maker's roof limit.

Can I add tie down points to a Wedgetail Trade rack side?

Yes. The Wedgetail Trade side tiedown points mount to the Wedgetail Trade side mounting channels.
