Yakima vs Rhino-Rack: LockNLoad or Pioneer 6?

Short answer

Neither wins on every count: for platforms of a similar size, the Yakima LockNLoad (1530 x 1250 mm, assembled) is $1,250 and 22.9 kg with a published 100 to 150 kg rating on RuggedLine mounts and a limited lifetime warranty, while the Rhino-Rack Pioneer 6 (1500 x 1240 mm) is $1,319 RRP and 16.2 kg with a 5 year warranty and no load figure on its page. Both treat off-road loads separately: Yakima subtracts a reduction set by product and mount type, and Rhino-Rack works out an off-road rating from the owner's manual or each product's fitting instructions. Neither price includes the vehicle mount: Yakima's RuggedLine mounts are $550, and on a double cab Ford Ranger the Rhino-Rack Backbone is $679. The Australian-made option is Wedgetail Adventure: made in Bayswater VIC, rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic on most fitments and 100% off-road with no derating, with a warranty of 10 years.

Load and off-road ratings

Yakima publishes a 100 kg to 150 kg product load rating for LockNLoad on RuggedLine and refers buyers to the product instructions for each SKU. Its ratings apply to well-formed sealed roads; off-road, a reduction set by product and mount type is subtracted, and its chart lists 0%, 20%, 33% and 50%. Yakima puts static at 3 x dynamic.

Rhino-Rack's Pioneer 6 page shows no load value. Rhino-Rack's load rating page defines separate on-road, off-road and static ratings; the off-road rating comes from the vehicle owner's manual or, if it is not listed there, the formula in the product's fitting instructions.

Every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating, and static is 3.5 x dynamic. Wedgetail Adventure platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic on most fitments; the exact figure is listed for each vehicle. Off-road load ratings explained.

Price and mounting

Yakima lists the 1530 x 1250 mm assembled LockNLoad at $1,250, with the RuggedLine platform-to-vehicle mounting system a separate $550 product. Rhino-Rack lists the 1500 x 1240 mm Pioneer 6 at $1,319 RRP inc GST; it sits on a Backbone or legs made for the vehicle, such as the $679 Backbone for a double cab Ford Ranger P703. A Wedgetail price is for a complete solution made to suit the vehicle: Wedgetail Adventure is $1,525 to $5,905 RRP inc GST across the range.

Accessories

  • Yakima LockNLoad: seven east-west slats with 21 mm accessory slots, plus slots on the underside of all perimeter sides, and an integrated wind deflector.
  • Rhino-Rack Pioneer 6: East/West mounting channels, no channel apertures, and wiring can run inside the extrusions. Detachable wind fairing inserts sit in the leading edge.
  • Wedgetail Adventure: the lip around the platform is there for strength. Some third-party accessories need a 10 mm spacer to clear it, and with that they fit. There is no Wedgetail spacer kit; see do third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail.

Weight, material and origin

Yakima lists the assembled LockNLoad at 22.9 kg in powder-coated, corrosion-resistant aluminium; its product page does not say where it is made, and Yakima describes the RuggedLine mounts as designed and tested in Australia. Rhino-Rack lists the Pioneer 6 at 16.2 kg and 45 mm high, in alloy components with a scuff-resistant coating, and gives China as the country of origin. Rack weight counts against the vehicle's roof limit.

Warranty

Yakima gives a limited lifetime warranty on roof racks, mounts and accessories, but use on unsealed roads or off-road terrain where not explicitly permitted is not covered. Rhino-Rack gives 5 years on Pioneer platforms. Wedgetail Adventure carries 10 years.

Who each one suits

  • Yakima LockNLoad: buyers who want a platform that arrives assembled, with a published 100 to 150 kg rating on RuggedLine mounts, and who will stay within the off-road reduction for their mount.
  • Rhino-Rack Pioneer 6: buyers who want a lighter channel platform on a Backbone or legs made for their vehicle, with East/West accessory channels.
  • Wedgetail Adventure: buyers who want a rack made in Australia, sold as a complete solution for the vehicle, with one rating that holds on and off road.

Where the Australian-made option fits

Wedgetail Adventure is made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia. The main frame is welded and the other parts bolt or click together, so it ships flat pack, and every one of the 134 Wedgetail stockists sells and fits it. For each brand head to head see Wedgetail vs Yakima and Wedgetail vs Rhino-Rack; for brands that make racks here see Australian-made roof racks.

Questions people ask

Are Yakima roof racks good for 4WDs in Australia?

Yes, within their ratings: Yakima rates LockNLoad on RuggedLine at 100 to 150 kg on sealed roads and subtracts a reduction off-road, and its warranty excludes off-road use where not explicitly permitted. Check the rating for your make, model, year and mount.

Is Yakima or Rhino-Rack better?

Neither is better on every count. The LockNLoad publishes a load rating and a lifetime warranty; the Pioneer 6 is lighter for a similar size and carries 5 years. Choose on the mount for your vehicle and the gear you will carry.

Which is lighter?

The Pioneer 6: Rhino-Rack lists the 1500 x 1240 mm platform at 16.2 kg, and Yakima lists the 1530 x 1250 mm assembled LockNLoad at 22.9 kg. Both figures are before the vehicle mount.

Can I put a rooftop tent on either one?

Check the static and off-road figures for your exact kit first. Yakima puts static at 3 x dynamic; Rhino-Rack defines a separate static rating but gives no figure on the platform page. On a Wedgetail platform static is 3.5 x dynamic (350 or 525 kg static on most platforms).

Where are Yakima and Rhino-Rack platforms made?

Rhino-Rack lists China as the country of origin for the Pioneer 6. Yakima's LockNLoad page does not say; Yakima describes its RuggedLine mounts as designed and tested in Australia. Wedgetail racks are made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia.

Which has the longer warranty?

Yakima on length: a limited lifetime warranty against Rhino-Rack's 5 years on Pioneer platforms, but Yakima's does not cover off-road use where not explicitly permitted. Wedgetail Adventure carries 10 years.

Will my Yakima or Rhino-Rack accessories fit a Wedgetail?

Yes. Third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail platform; some need a 10 mm spacer to clear the strength lip, and with that they fit. There is no Wedgetail spacer kit.
