Alternatives
Alternatives to the Yakima LockNLoad platform
Short answer
If you carry loads off the bitumen or want a rack made in Australia, the alternative to the Yakima LockNLoad platform is a Wedgetail Adventure platform: made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia, rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic on most fitments and 100% off-road with no derating, with a warranty of 10 years. Yakima's load ratings apply to well-formed sealed roads with an off-road reduction set by the mount, and its warranty does not cover off-road use where not explicitly permitted. Wedgetail Core is the lower-priced Wedgetail ($1,400 to $1,695 RRP inc GST, warranty of 3 years), and Tracklander's Prado 250 platform kit is made in Australia, 100% off-road load rated and $2,049 RRP inc GST with a 5 year, unlimited kilometre warranty.

Yakima LockNLoad Platform
The platform you are comparing against. It is sold without vehicle mounting, its ratings apply to sealed roads with an off-road reduction by mount type, and its limited lifetime warranty excludes off-road use where not explicitly permitted.

Who should look elsewhere
- You carry a rooftop tent, water or recovery gear on unsealed roads. Yakima subtracts an off-road reduction from its sealed-road rating, set by the product and mount, and its warranty does not cover off-road use where not explicitly permitted. Wedgetail and Tracklander both rate their racks to the full figure off-road.
- You want it made in Australia. Yakima's product page does not say where the LockNLoad Platform is made. Wedgetail is made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia, and Tracklander says its racks are made in Australia.
- You want one price for a complete fitment. The LockNLoad Platform is sold without vehicle mounting; the RuggedLine mounting system is a separate $550 product. A Wedgetail is made to suit the vehicle with the mounting included, and the Tracklander kit price includes its mounts.
- You sleep in a rooftop tent. Yakima works out static as 3 x dynamic. Wedgetail publishes static at 3.5 x dynamic, 350 or 525 kg static on most platforms.
Which to choose
- 1. Wedgetail Adventure: made in Australia, the full rating off-road and the longest Wedgetail warranty. Start here if the rack will leave the bitumen.
- 2. Wedgetail Core: the same rating rules at a lower price, if it is listed for your vehicle on Find My Vehicle.
- 3. Tracklander: a fully welded platform from another Australian maker. Ask Tracklander for the dynamic and static figures for your exact kit, because the Prado 250 page gives a rating of 200 without a unit.
- Stay with the LockNLoad if you drive mostly sealed roads and want its slat system (7 east-west slats with 21 mm accessory slots on the 1530 x 1250 mm size). Check the off-road reduction for your mount in Yakima's load rating document before any trip off the bitumen.
Price the same vehicle
Compare complete setups, not platform prices. Yakima lists the 1530 x 1250 mm assembled LockNLoad Platform at $1,250 on its own; the vehicle mounting is extra. On a BYD Shark 6, a Wedgetail price covers the full fitment: see the BYD Shark 6 Adventure platform, the BYD Shark Wedgetail Core or every option in the BYD Shark 6 guide.
Off-road ratings in plain terms
A rack that is derated off-road carries less once you leave sealed roads, so the figure on the box is not the figure on a corrugated track. Every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating, with no second, lower number. Why most racks are derated off-road and Wedgetail is not explains the difference, and the vehicle maker's roof limit still applies to any rack.
Accessories you already own
Third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail platform. The lip around the edge is there for strength, so some accessories need a 10 mm spacer to clear it, and with that they fit. There is no Wedgetail spacer kit. See do third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail. The head to head is Wedgetail vs Yakima LockNLoad, and Australian-made roof racks lists which brands make racks here.

Questions people ask
What is the alternative to a Yakima LockNLoad for off-road use?
A Wedgetail Adventure platform: rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating (100 or 150 kg dynamic on most fitments), made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia, with a warranty of 10 years. Yakima's ratings apply to sealed roads and reduce off-road by mount type.
Is the Yakima LockNLoad derated off-road?
Yes, depending on the mount. Yakima's load rating document says its ratings apply to well-formed sealed roads and lists off-road reductions of 0%, 20%, 33% or 50% by product and mount type. Every Wedgetail carries its full rating off-road.
Does Yakima's warranty cover off-road use?
Not unless explicitly permitted. Yakima's limited lifetime warranty does not cover use on unsealed roads or off-road terrain where not explicitly permitted. Wedgetail Adventure carries a warranty of 10 years and is rated to its full rating off-road.
Is there an Australian-made alternative to Yakima?
Yes. Wedgetail Adventure and Core platforms are made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia, and Tracklander says its racks are made in Australia. Yakima's product page does not say where the LockNLoad Platform is made.
Is there a Wedgetail for my vehicle?
Search your make, model and year in Find My Vehicle. Each Wedgetail is made to suit a vehicle, with the mounting included, and lists its rating, size and price; Wedgetail Core is listed for fewer vehicles than Adventure.
Can a Wedgetail carry a rooftop tent?
Yes. Platforms are the rooftop tent base: the tent goes against the dynamic rating and the tent plus occupants against the static rating, 3.5 x dynamic (350 or 525 kg static on most platforms). The rooftop tent guide works through the maths.
Will my Yakima accessories fit a Wedgetail?
Yes. Third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail platform; some need a 10 mm spacer to clear the strength lip around the edge, and with that they fit. Check the clamp or bracket on each accessory first.
