Rooftop tent roof rack guide

Short answer

Use the dynamic rating for the tent weight on the move and the static rating for the tent plus occupants when parked: Wedgetail static = 3.5 x dynamic (100 or 150 kg dynamic = 350 or 525 kg static on most platforms), and the rating holds 100% off-road. The vehicle maker's roof limit applies as well, so the lower figure wins. Mount the tent with the Wedgetail roof top tent mounting hardware.

Three checks before you buy

  1. Driving: the tent (plus anything else on the platform) must be within the platform's dynamic rating.
  2. Parked: the tent plus the people in it must be within the static rating. On a Wedgetail, static is 3.5 x dynamic.
  3. The vehicle: the load must also be within the vehicle maker's roof limit. Use the lower figure.

Wedgetail platform ratings

Every rating below is per solution, from the current Wedgetail product data. The figure that applies to you is the one listed for your exact vehicle fitment.

Cab, canopy or tub on a dual cab

Wedgetail Adventure platforms are listed for cab roofs, canopies and tubs. On a canopy, Wedgetail fits ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion and Ascent; a canopy not on the list is not fitted. The same rating checks apply whichever mount you choose.

Mounting the tent

Mount the tent with the Wedgetail roof top tent mounting hardware. Step by step instructions are in the how to mount a rooftop tent guide, and static vs dynamic explains the 3.5 x rule.

Installed height

Installed platform heights are not published yet. To know the total height with a tent, measure from the roof to the top of the platform rails on the fitted rack and add the closed height of your tent.

How to check a tent against the ratings

  1. Find your platform's dynamic rating

Look up your exact vehicle fitment; the dynamic rating is listed per solution.

  2. Check the tent weight

The tent's packed weight, plus anything else on the platform, must be at or below the dynamic rating.

  3. Work out the static rating

Multiply the dynamic rating by 3.5. The platform rating table above lists each dynamic rating with its static equivalent.

  4. Check tent plus occupants

Add the tent weight to the weight of everyone who will sleep in it. The total must be at or below the static rating.

  5. Check the vehicle roof limit

The load must also be within the vehicle maker's roof limit. Use the lower of the two figures.

Questions people ask

How heavy a tent can I carry driving?

Up to the platform's dynamic rating for your vehicle fitment, and within the vehicle maker's roof limit. Most Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic.

What does static rating mean when sleeping in the tent?

The load the platform holds while parked: tent plus occupants. On a Wedgetail it is 3.5 x the dynamic rating, so 350 or 525 kg static on most platforms.

Cab or canopy for a dual cab?

Either, where Wedgetail lists a solution: on the cab, on the tub, or on an ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion or Ascent canopy. A canopy not on the list is not fitted.

Which mounting hardware?

Can I put a rooftop tent on factory roof rails?

Only if the rails' own rating and the vehicle maker's roof limit both cover the tent, and the lowest figure applies. A Wedgetail platform is made to suit each vehicle; Find My Vehicle lists the fitments for yours.

Is the rating reduced off-road?

No. Every Wedgetail product is 100% off-road rated to its full rating.
