Wedgetail vs Thule Caprock roof platform

Short answer

The Thule Caprock is a universal platform made in Poland that mounts on Thule foot packs or a crossbar kit sold separately, while a Wedgetail platform is a complete rack made to suit your vehicle in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia and rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating. Thule lists the Caprock M (150 x 150 cm) at $1,649.95 with a load capacity up to 150 kg and no off-road or static figure; Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic on most fitments, with static at 3.5 x dynamic (350 or 525 kg static). Wedgetail Adventure carries a warranty of 10 years; Thule's guarantee is 2 years on all products, with a further 3 years listed for roof racks but platforms not named. Third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail, some with a 10 mm spacer to clear the strength lip.

Universal platform or vehicle-specific rack

Thule sells the Caprock in sizes from S to XXL plus two truck bed lengths, and it is not made for one vehicle. Its product page says it mounts directly to Thule Evo foot packs, or to third-party and factory racks with the Thule Caprock Crossbar Kit, sold separately at $399.95; the page does not say whether foot packs are included. A Wedgetail platform is a complete rack made to suit a vehicle, so the price you see covers the rack and its mounting for that fitment.

Look up your own vehicle on Find My Vehicle to see the Wedgetail fitment, its rating and its price.

What the ratings mean

Thule gives the Caprock a load capacity up to 150 kg and publishes no separate off-road or static figure; its FAQ only says it is designed to withstand rugged off road environments. On a Wedgetail, the dynamic rating listed for your vehicle applies on sealed and unsealed roads alike, and static is 3.5 x dynamic.

Whatever platform you choose, your vehicle's own roof limit still applies: use the lower of the rack rating and the vehicle limit. See off-road load ratings and static vs dynamic ratings.

Warranty

Thule's warranty page gives a 2 year Thule Guarantee on all products and lists roof racks for a further 3 years of extended warranty; roof platforms are not named in that list, so check the Caprock with Thule before you buy. Wedgetail Adventure carries 10 years, Wedgetail Trade 5 years and Wedgetail Core 3 years.

Accessories: T-track or the lip

The Caprock has built in T-tracks on the slats and perimeter. The lip around a Wedgetail platform is there for strength; some third-party accessories need a 10 mm spacer to clear it, and with that they fit. The accessory compatibility guide explains the lip and the spacer, and Wedgetail sells its own accessories.

Who makes them

Thule's product page lists Poland as the Caprock's country of origin. Wedgetail racks are made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia; see the Wedgetail facts, Australian-made roof racks and the roof rack brands guide. If you drive a ute, the alternatives to Thule racks for a ute guide covers cab and canopy options.

Questions people ask

Is the Thule Caprock rated for off-road use?

Thule publishes no off-road rating for the Caprock. Its page gives a load capacity up to 150 kg and says it is designed for rugged off road environments. Every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating, with no derating.

Where is the Thule Caprock made?

Poland, according to the country of origin on Thule's Caprock M product page. Wedgetail racks are made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia.

What else do I need to fit a Thule Caprock?

Thule Evo foot packs, or the Thule Caprock Crossbar Kit ($399.95, sold separately) to fit it to third-party or factory racks. Thule's page does not say whether foot packs are included. A Wedgetail is a complete rack made to suit your vehicle.

Which has the longer warranty?

Wedgetail Adventure, at 10 years. Thule's guarantee is 2 years on all products, and its extended warranty list names roof racks but not roof platforms.

Does it matter whether my ute has a bare roof or a canopy?

Yes, it decides the rack. Wedgetail makes platforms for the cab roof and for fitted canopies and service bodies, including ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion and Ascent canopies. Check your vehicle on Find My Vehicle.

Do other brands' accessories fit a Wedgetail?

Yes. Some third-party accessories need a 10 mm spacer to clear the lip around the platform, and with that they fit.

Where can I buy and get a Wedgetail fitted?

From 134 stockists across Australia, every one of which sells and fits, or at the factory in Bayswater VIC, which fits racks on site. See where to buy.
