Technical answer

Static vs dynamic roof load rating

Short answer

Dynamic is what the rack carries while driving; static is what it holds parked (people in a rooftop tent). For every Wedgetail solution static = 3.5 x dynamic, and the dynamic rating holds 100% off-road. Most Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic, which gives 350 or 525 kg static. The vehicle maker's roof limit also applies, so use the lower figure.

What each rating means

  • Dynamic rating: the most the rack can carry while the vehicle is moving. Braking, cornering and bumps multiply the forces on the rack, so this is the lower figure.
  • Static rating: the most the rack can hold while the vehicle is parked, for example a rooftop tent with people in it.
  • Off-road rating: some brands publish a separate, lower figure for unsealed roads. Wedgetail does not: every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating.

The 3.5 x rule

For every Wedgetail solution with a rating, the static rating is 3.5 times the dynamic rating. Most platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic, so they hold 350 or 525 kg static. The table lists every rating in the product data.

Ratings are per solution: there is no single brand-wide figure. Where a solution has no figure in the product data it is shown as "No published rating", never as zero.

The vehicle's own limit

The vehicle maker also sets a roof limit. Your load must be within both the rack's rating and the vehicle's limit, so the lower figure applies. The model guides list the maker's figure where it is published.

Using it for a rooftop tent

The tent on the move goes against the dynamic rating; the tent plus the people sleeping in it go against the static rating. The rooftop tent roof rack guide works through an example, and how to mount a rooftop tent covers fitting.

How to work out your static rating

  1. Find the dynamic rating

Look up your vehicle fitment; the dynamic rating is listed per solution.

  2. Multiply by 3.5

The result is the static rating, the most the rack holds parked.

  3. Compare with the vehicle limit

Check the vehicle maker's roof limit and use the lower figure.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between static and dynamic roof load?

Dynamic is the load a rack carries while the vehicle moves; static is the load it holds while parked. Static is always the higher figure.

How do I work out the static rating of a Wedgetail rack?

Multiply the dynamic rating by 3.5. Most Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic, which gives 350 or 525 kg static.

Is the dynamic rating reduced off-road?

Not on a Wedgetail. Every Wedgetail product is 100% off-road rated to its full rating.

Which figure do I use for a rooftop tent?

Both. The tent on the move goes against the dynamic rating; the tent plus occupants when parked goes against the static rating.

Where do I find the rating for my vehicle?

On the product page for your vehicle fitment: search your make, model and year in Find My Vehicle. Each solution lists one dynamic rating.

Does the vehicle's roof limit still apply?

Yes. The lower of the rack rating and the vehicle maker's roof limit applies.
