Technical answer

Can you put a rooftop tent on factory roof rails?

Short answer

Factory rails often carry a low dynamic rating; replacing them with a rated platform that bolts to the OE points (as Wedgetail does on many 4WDs) is the safer route. Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic (350 or 525 kg static parked), 100% off-road with no derating. The vehicle maker's roof limit still applies, so the lower of the two figures is your limit.

Vehicle maker figures read from each maker's own website on 14 October 2026; Wedgetail figures from Wedgetail product data, updated .

What vehicle makers publish for factory rails and genuine bars

Most makers do not print a rating for the rails themselves. They publish a figure for their own genuine bars or tray on those rails, and that figure is the closest guide to what the factory setup is built to carry. Three examples, read from each maker's own site:

The Prado tray figure shows the catch: once a tray or platform sits on the bars, what is left for the tent is lower than the bar rating. A hard shell tent can use most or all of that.

The three checks for a tent on any roof

  1. Driving (dynamic): the tent, the rack and anything else on the roof must be within the lowest of the vehicle maker's roof limit and the rack's dynamic rating.
  2. Parked (static): the tent plus the people sleeping in it must be within the static figure. Kia, for example, says occupant weight must not exceed the roof rack's load capacity.
  3. Mounting: the tent needs a flat, rated base across the roof. Side rails run front to back and are a mounting base, not a place to bolt a tent directly.
Worked example (illustration only): a 60 kg tent on a 100 kg platform

The same 60 kg tent on genuine bars rated 80 kg leaves 20 kg for the bars themselves and anything else on the roof. The rooftop tent guide works through the maths for heavier tents.

Why a platform on the OE points is the safer route

  • It mounts to the vehicle's own points. On many 4WDs the Wedgetail fitment mounts to the vehicle's own fixing points: the fit methods in the product data include rails using OEM fixtures, bolting to OE holes, fixed points and rails on OE tracks. Each vehicle fitment lists its own method.
  • It has its own published rating. Each Wedgetail solution carries one dynamic rating, with static at 3.5 x dynamic, and that rating holds 100% off-road. See static vs dynamic ratings.
  • It is a tent base. Platforms are the rooftop tent base, and the tent fits with the Wedgetail roof top tent mounting hardware.

A platform does not lift the vehicle's own limit. If the maker publishes a roof figure lower than the platform rating, that lower figure is the one you load to. The roof load limits table and each model guide list the maker's figure where it is published.

Vehicles with factory rails

Fit methods differ by vehicle. Fitting Wedgetail racks to factory rails covers what to check on a vehicle with factory rails, and Find My Vehicle shows the fit method, rating and size for your exact vehicle.

Questions people ask

Can I put a rooftop tent on my factory roof rails?

Only if the whole setup is within the vehicle maker's figures. Isuzu, Toyota and Kia publish 80 to 100 kg for their genuine bars or roof rack, and Toyota lists less once its tray is fitted, so check your vehicle before you buy the tent.

Where do I find my vehicle's roof limit?

In the owner's manual or on the maker's genuine accessories page for your model. If the maker publishes nothing, ask the dealer in writing before loading a tent.

Does the weight of the rack count?

Yes. The driving limit covers the bars or platform, the tent and anything else on the roof.

Do the people in the tent count against the driving limit?

No. People are only up there when parked, so the tent plus occupants goes against the static figure, which for a Wedgetail platform is 3.5 x the dynamic rating (350 or 525 kg static).

Is a Wedgetail platform rated lower off-road?

No. Every Wedgetail is 100% off-road rated to its full rating, 100 or 150 kg dynamic on platforms.

Does a platform let me carry more than the vehicle maker allows?

No. The lower of the platform rating and the vehicle maker's roof limit always applies.
