Load ratings

Roof load limits for Australian 4WDs, utes and vans

Short answer

Your load limit is the lower of the vehicle roof rating and the rack rating, minus rack weight. The table lists the vehicle maker's figure where we found one published, with its source, and links to the Wedgetail guide for each model. Most Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic (350 or 525 kg static), and every Wedgetail rating holds 100% off-road with no derating.

Roof limits by vehicle

Figures are the vehicle maker's, as published or as reported by the source linked in each row, read on 14 October 2026. Where the maker's accessory page lists genuine bar ratings but no roof limit, the table says so. Check your owner's manual for your exact variant, because sunroofs, roof rails and body styles can change the figure.

Each Wedgetail model guide lists every fitment for that vehicle with its own dynamic rating, static rating, size and fit method. For a vehicle not in the table, including the Toyota Fortuner, HiAce and most vans, we did not find a published maker figure we could check: use the owner's manual, or ask a stockist when you order.

How to work out what you can carry

  1. Find the vehicle's roof limit in the owner's manual or the table above.
  2. Find the rack's rating for your exact fitment in the Wedgetail model guide or on the product page.
  3. Take the lower of the two.
  4. Subtract the rack's weight and anything fixed to it, such as an awning, brackets or a tent mount. Wedgetail product pages list the rack's weight where it is published.
  5. What is left is your gear allowance while driving. For a parked load, such as a rooftop tent with people in it, compare against the static figures instead.

Worked example (illustration only): a vehicle with a 75 kg roof limit and a rack weighing 20 kg leaves 55 kg for gear while driving, even when the rack itself is rated higher. The vehicle figure is the one that stops you.

Where Wedgetail ratings sit

Most Wedgetail platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic, which is 350 or 525 kg static parked (static is 3.5 x dynamic). A few fitments carry a different rating, so check yours. Every Wedgetail rating holds 100% off-road with no derating, so the figure you check on a sealed road is the same figure on corrugations. Where the vehicle's own limit is lower than the rack rating, the vehicle limit applies.

More on the two figures in static vs dynamic roof load rating, and on off-road derating in off-road roof load ratings.

Driving, parked and off-road figures

  • Driving (dynamic): the figure for the vehicle in motion. Braking, cornering and bumps multiply the force on the roof, so it is the lower figure.
  • Parked (static): where a maker publishes one (Ranger, Amarok, Shark 6, Tasman, Pajero Sport in the table), it is much higher and applies only while the vehicle is stationary.
  • Off-road: some makers and rack brands publish a lower figure for unsealed roads. Mazda's genuine BT-50 crossbars are cited at 60 kg off road against 90 kg on road. A Wedgetail rack keeps its full rating off-road, but the vehicle's own limit still applies.

Canopy and service body racks

The cab roof figure applies to the cab roof only. A rack on a canopy or service body works to the canopy or body maker's rating and the rack's rating, not the cab figure. See which canopies and service bodies Wedgetail fits and canopy mount or cab mount.

Questions people ask

Does the roof load limit include the weight of the roof rack?

Yes. The makers' dynamic figures reported for the HiLux, Everest and Patrol include the rack, so subtract the rack's weight and anything fixed to it from the limit to get your gear allowance.

What is the roof load limit on a Ford Ranger?

85 kg while driving and 350 kg parked on the Next Gen (2022 on) cab roof, as reported from Ford's release. Check your owner's manual for your variant, and see the Ford Ranger guide for the Wedgetail fitments.

What is the Pajero Sport roof load capacity?

100 kg while driving and 300 kg parked, as reported by AutoExpert citing Mitsubishi. The Wedgetail options are in the Pajero Sport guide.

What is the Toyota Fortuner roof load capacity?

We did not find a published Toyota figure for the Fortuner, so check the owner's manual. The Wedgetail fitments and their ratings are in the Toyota Fortuner guide.

How much weight can a roof rack carry on a HiLux?

The HiLux cab roof limit is reported at 75 kg including the rack. Subtract the rack's weight to get what you can load while driving, even if the rack is rated higher.

Is the roof load limit lower off-road?

Not for the rack, if it is a Wedgetail: every Wedgetail rating holds 100% off-road. The vehicle maker's limit still applies, and some genuine bars carry a lower off-road figure.

Does a canopy have its own roof load limit?

Yes. The cab roof figure does not apply to a canopy or service body; use the canopy or body maker's rating and the rack's rating.
