Comparison

Wedgetail vs Offroad Animal Scout roof rack

Short answer

The biggest difference is the off-road rating: every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating, while Offroad Animal rates its Scout Roof Rack for the 2022-on Ranger at 95 kg driving and 63 kg off-road. A Wedgetail's static rating is 3.5 x dynamic (350 or 525 kg static), against 190 kg sitting still for the Scout. Wedgetail racks are made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia with a welded main frame, and warranty is 10 years on Wedgetail Adventure against 24 months on the Scout. Third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail, some with a 10 mm spacer to clear the strength lip.

What the off-road difference means

Offroad Animal's own product page works the Scout's off-road figure down further: it rates the rack at 63 kg off-road and subtracts the rack's own weight, leaving 48 kg of gear off the bitumen. On a Wedgetail, the dynamic rating listed for your vehicle is the figure on sealed and unsealed roads alike, so what you can carry to camp is what you can carry down the track.

Whatever rack you choose, the vehicle maker's roof limit still applies. Check the rating listed for your exact fitment in the Ford Ranger roof rack guide.

Build and fitting

A Wedgetail Adventure platform has a welded main frame; the other parts bolt or click together and it ships flat pack. Offroad Animal supplies the Scout as five T slot aluminium rails, side rails, front and rear mounts and a bag of nuts and bolts, and its page notes the head liner needs to be dropped to fit it on the Next Gen Ranger.

Accessory compatibility

The lip around a Wedgetail platform is there for strength. Some third-party accessories need a 10 mm spacer to clear it, and with that they fit. There is no Wedgetail spacer kit; the accessory compatibility guide explains the lip and the spacer. Wedgetail also sells its own accessories.

Comparing price

Wedgetail prices are for a complete rack made to suit a vehicle. The Scout's listed price is for the Next Gen Ranger kit. Compare the full kit for your own vehicle using Find My Vehicle, and see the Wedgetail facts for who makes the racks and how they are rated.
