Wedgetail vs TrailMax Alloy Roof Rack

Short answer

The biggest differences between a Wedgetail Adventure platform and the TrailMax alloy roof rack are the off-road rating, the warranty and where the rack is made. Every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full dynamic rating (100 or 150 kg dynamic on most platforms) with static = 3.5 x dynamic; TrailMax lists 110 kg dynamic and 320 kg static for its Ranger Next Gen alloy rack without saying whether that applies off-road. Wedgetail Adventure has a warranty of 10 years and is made in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia; TrailMax gives 24 months on manufacturing and 60 months on the alloy surface finish, and says its racks are designed in Australia without stating where they are made.

Off-road and static ratings

TrailMax's Ranger Next Gen alloy rack page lists 110 kg dynamic and 320 kg static, and its FAQ gives 110 to 150 kg dynamic and 320 to 360 kg static depending on the vehicle. The pages we read do not say whether those figures apply off-road. On a Wedgetail, the dynamic rating listed for your vehicle is the figure on sealed and unsealed roads alike, and static is 3.5 x dynamic, giving 350 or 525 kg static on a platform when parked. See static vs dynamic ratings and the 3.5 x rule.

TrailMax notes that the vehicle maker's roof load limit overrides its ratings. The same applies to any rack, Wedgetail included.

Warranty

TrailMax's warranty table gives 24 months on manufacturing from the invoice date, 60 months on the alloy surface finish from installation, and 6 months on labour when an accredited TrailMax reseller fits it. Wedgetail warranties are 10 years on Adventure, 3 years on Core and 5 years on Trade.

Price and what is in the box

TrailMax lists the Ranger Next Gen alloy rack at $1,980 with the mounting rails and hardware, two rear LED lights and light bar brackets; it says the front mounting holes need drilling. A Wedgetail price is for a complete solution made to suit the vehicle, with the wind deflector included. For the same ute, see the Ford Ranger 2022 on Adventure platform or every option in the Ford Ranger guide.

Accessory compatibility

The lip around a Wedgetail platform is there for strength. Some third-party accessories need a 10 mm spacer to clear it, and with that they fit. There is no Wedgetail spacer kit; see do third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail.

Who makes Wedgetail

Wedgetail is a brand created by Tradesman Roof Racks Pty Ltd, established 1978 and made at 7-9 Newcastle Road, Bayswater VIC 3153. The Wedgetail facts page has the ratings, warranty and materials for every range.
