Best for
Best roof rack for a rooftop tent on a dual cab ute
Short answer
Use a cab-mount platform for a tent that weighs no more than the platform's dynamic rating, or a canopy-mount platform to put the tent over the tray; Wedgetail cab platforms suit the Ranger, HiLux, D-MAX, BT-50, Triton and Shark 6, and Wedgetail fits ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion and Ascent canopies. A canopy mount is not automatically rated higher: most Wedgetail canopy platforms carry the same rating as the cab platform on the same ute, and the canopy maker's roof rating applies as well. Every Wedgetail is rated 100% off-road to its full rating, and the static rating, which covers the tent plus the people sleeping in it, is 3.5 x the dynamic rating.

Cab or canopy on a dual cab
- Cab mount: the tent sits over the cab and the tray stays free. A dual cab roof is short, so check the tent's base length against the platform length for your ute, listed on its product page.
- Canopy mount: the tent sits over the tray on a fitted canopy and the cab roof stays free for other gear. Wedgetail fits ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion and Ascent canopies; a canopy not on this list is not fitted. See which canopies Wedgetail racks fit.
- One structure per tent: a ute's cab and tray move separately over rough ground. A Wedgetail cab platform or canopy platform carries the tent on one structure, so the tent does not span the gap between cab and canopy.
- Your vehicle's roof limit: the rack rating and the vehicle maker's roof limit both apply. Use the lower figure.
The tent weight check
Two checks, both against the rating for your exact fitment. Driving, the tent must be within the dynamic rating. Parked, the tent plus everyone sleeping in it must be within the static rating, which is 3.5 x the dynamic rating. To find the dynamic rating you need, take the larger of the tent weight, or the tent plus occupants divided by 3.5.
| Example | Driving (dynamic) | Parked (static) | Dynamic rating needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 kg soft shell tent, two adults (160 kg) | 60 kg | 60 + 160 = 220 kg | At least 63 kg (the larger of 60 kg and 220 / 3.5) |
| 80 kg hard shell tent, three people (240 kg) | 80 kg | 80 + 240 = 320 kg | At least 92 kg (the larger of 80 kg and 320 / 3.5) |
| Any tent | Tent plus anything else on the rack | Tent plus occupants | Also within the vehicle maker's roof limit |
Compare the figure you need with the rating on the shortlist above and on the product page for your ute. Read more in static vs dynamic roof load rating explained and the rooftop tent roof rack guide.
Which dual cabs are listed
Wedgetail Adventure cab platforms are listed for the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-MAX, Mazda BT-50, Mitsubishi Triton and BYD Shark 6, plus the GWM Cannon, Nissan Navara, Volkswagen Amarok, LDV T60, Kia Tasman and others. On the LandCruiser 79 dual cab, the LandCruiser 200 and 300 dual cab and the Patrol Y62 dual cab, the cab platform carries the higher of the two platform ratings.
Fitments change with the model generation and with factory roof rails, so search your ute in Find My Vehicle. The ute roof rack buying guide covers cab, canopy and tub mounts in more detail.
What size platform for a dual cab
The fitment sets the size. Each Wedgetail dual cab platform is made for that cab roof, and its width and length are on the product page. Check that the tent's mounting rails line up with the platform crossbars and that the tent base sits within the platform. See what size platform do I need.
Questions people ask
How heavy a tent can I carry while driving?
Up to the platform's dynamic rating for your fitment, and within your ute's roof limit; use the lower figure. On the Ranger, HiLux, D-MAX, BT-50, Triton and Shark 6, Wedgetail Adventure cab platforms carry the lower of the two platform ratings shown in the shortlist above.
What does static rating mean when sleeping in the tent?
It is the load the platform holds parked: the tent plus the people in it. For every Wedgetail with a rating, static is 3.5 x dynamic, so divide the tent plus occupants by 3.5 to get the dynamic rating you need.
Cab or canopy for a dual cab?
Either, if Wedgetail lists a platform for your cab or canopy. A cab mount keeps the tray free; a canopy mount keeps the cab roof free. Wedgetail fits ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion and Ascent canopies; a canopy not on the list is not fitted. See canopy mount or cab mount.
Is a canopy mount rated higher than a cab mount?
Not usually. Most Wedgetail canopy platforms carry the same rating as the cab platform on the same ute, and the canopy maker's roof rating applies as well. Check both and use the lower.
Which mounting hardware?
The Wedgetail roof top tent mounting hardware, used on Wedgetail Adventure platforms. See how to mount a rooftop tent on a Wedgetail platform.
Is there a platform for the LandCruiser 79 dual cab?
Yes. Wedgetail Adventure lists a cab platform for the LandCruiser 79 dual cab, and it carries the higher of the two platform ratings. See the LandCruiser 70 Series guide.
Is the rating reduced off-road?
No. Every Wedgetail is 100% off-road rated to its full rating. There is no separate, lower off-road figure, and every Wedgetail stockist sells and fits: see where to buy.
