FAQ

Roof rack FAQ for Australian 4WD and ute owners

Short answer

To choose a roof rack you need six answers: your cab type, model year, whether the rack goes on the cab or a canopy, your roof type, the weight of any rooftop tent, and what you carry. Each is answered below. On a Wedgetail, platforms are rated 100 or 150 kg dynamic per fitment (350 or 525 kg static parked), every rating holds 100% off-road, and 134 stockists sell and fit.

Facts from Wedgetail product data, updated .

Your vehicle

Why does my cab type matter?

Because dual cab, extra cab and single cab utes take different platform sizes and mounts. Wedgetail lists a separate solution for each cab type, and some models also list separate fitments with and without factory roof rails.

Why does the model year matter?

Because roof shape and mount points change between generations, so a rack for one generation may not fit the next. The model guides list every Wedgetail option by generation, for example Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger.

What roof types are there?

Bare roofs with factory mounting holes or fixed points, factory roof rails, factory tracks, and rain gutters on older vehicles. Each Wedgetail solution lists its fit method; see roof rack mounting types.

What size platform do I need for a dual cab ute?

The size listed for your ute, year and cab type. Wedgetail matches platform length and width per fitment, so Find My Vehicle gives the size; measuring is covered in what size platform do I need.

How do I find a rack that fits my car?

Use Find My Vehicle: pick the make, model, year and body, and it lists every Wedgetail solution with its rating, fit method and price.

Cab or canopy

Should a ute roof rack go on the cab or the canopy?

On the cab for touring loads within the cab roof limit; on the canopy for ladders, pipe and other long or heavy loads. If you carry both, run a cab platform and a separate canopy rack. See the ute roof rack buying guide.

Which canopies does Wedgetail fit?

ARB, EGR Gen 2, Maxliner Venture, RSI Evo, Utemaster Centurion and Ascent canopies, plus Caddy Storage, CSM and Mode service bodies. A canopy or service body not on that list is not fitted.

Whose rating applies on a canopy?

The lower of the rack's rating and the canopy maker's roof rating. Wedgetail rates each canopy rack per solution.

Weight and ratings

How much weight can a roof rack carry on a HiLux?

The lower of the rack's dynamic rating and Toyota's cab roof limit. Wedgetail HiLux platforms are rated per fitment; the Toyota HiLux guide lists each rating and Toyota's figure where Toyota publishes one.

What is the difference between dynamic and static ratings?

Dynamic is what the rack carries while driving; static is what it holds parked. On a Wedgetail, static is 3.5 x dynamic. See static vs dynamic roof load rating.

Is a roof rack derated off-road?

On some brands, yes. Not on a Wedgetail: every Wedgetail is 100% off-road rated to its full rating.

Does the rack's own weight count?

Yes, against the vehicle's roof limit when the maker's figure includes the rack, which many do. Check the owner's manual for how the maker states it.

Rooftop tents

How heavy a rooftop tent can I carry?

Up to the platform's dynamic rating for your fitment while driving (100 or 150 kg dynamic on Wedgetail platforms), and within the vehicle's roof limit. Tent plus occupants parked must be within the static rating.

How do I mount a rooftop tent on a Wedgetail?

What you carry

Platform or roof bars?

A platform for mixed loads, touring gear or a rooftop tent; bars for light loads long enough to span them, such as ladders. See platform rack vs roof bars.

How do I mount a solar panel to a roof rack?

With brackets made for the platform. Wedgetail lists a solar panel bracket pair for panels up to 1000 mm long and a solar panel recessed mount kit. See roof rack for solar panels and an awning.

Do third-party accessories fit a Wedgetail?

Yes. The lip around the platform is there for strength, and a 10 mm spacer lets third-party accessories clear it. See third-party accessories.

Can I carry a kayak, boat or surfboards?

Surfboards, yes, on the racks. Commercial Max and Oval Steel take a removable boat roller pair. There is no Wedgetail kayak carrier.

Owning a rack

How do I stop my roof rack whistling?

Usually by closing open channels and stopping loose parts moving: fit the rubber infill strips made for the platform, check every bolt is tight, and tie off strap tails. Wedgetail noise testing is under way and results will be published per product.

Do roof racks void your car warranty in Australia?

No, not by themselves. A maker can still refuse a claim for damage the rack or its fitting caused, so stay within the roof limits and keep the fitting records.

Do roof racks use more fuel?

Yes. Any rack adds weight and drag, so fuel use rises by an amount that depends on the vehicle, speed and load. Wedgetail does not publish fuel figures.

Can I fit a roof rack myself?

Often, yes. Each Wedgetail solution has fitting instructions and a listed fit method; every stockist also fits, and racks are fitted at the factory in Bayswater VIC. See where to buy.
